Well, a guy I work with said he would give me an old engine, it's a 350 out of a 73 Nova. He's got a 69 Camaro and just ordered a new crate engine instead of re-building this one. He said it was running when he pulled it out of the Nova (parts car). I'm no pro on engines, I obviously know how they work etc..., but would it be worth re-building and swapping out my 305 TBI for it? There really isn't a learning curve on building an engine lol. I'm really not sure what all it would take. OR, should I just save for a MrGoodwrench crate engine?

I'd buy the crate, but that's just me.
You could tear that other motor down and find more than $2,000 worth of repairs. Just cause it ran doesn't mean it ran good lol.

I was kind of thinking that. By the time I get machine work done, get new(er) heads, cam, pistons, manifold, etc... I will more than likely have well over $2k in it...

I'll tell ya this, machine work and all the new parts i got for the yota motor was around $1700 bucks, and that was getting parts at cost with my hookup.
So take that figure for my 2.2l 4 banger and transfer it to your V8 lol

actually 4 bangers are way more expensive to rebuild. If you were to take the free engine as a core you can pick up a rebuilt with warranty long block for around 850. I personally put a 350 shortblock with a RV cam and flattop pistons with my 305 heads I had worked with a factory carb intake and exhaust manifolds that no 5.0 mustang could touch for less than a grand. ABC auto in tyler used to have great deals or look in autotrader lots of places in dallas and houston. I just hate the thought of buying new instead of using whats already there we as enthusiasts are headed where we aren't gonna have these options if things don't turn around. sorry for gettin on the soapbox just been workin on em too long and hate the trend of crate engines. plus on that crate your gonna need way more than intake, headers, you have to finish the motor externally

Where could I get that deal at on a rebuild? Also, it's something I would rather do myself, because it's always interested me, but I dont' have the know how or a ton of money. I just want to get something started, because my 305 has 229,000 miles on it, and I know it's just a mater of time.

I'll see what I can't find for you and post it here headed to class for now maybe in mornin. It really is a cool feelin startin somethin you did yourself. can be overwhelming but with a good shop manual and a little encouragement it can be a great experience.
